The APM Music catalogue of late 80’s and early 90’s corporate Muzak is a huge vault of Vaporwave-ready samples, waiting to be pitched, chopped and skewed.
APM Music are a production music company, offering ‘every type of music perfect for every type of media’. Deep in their vaults of waiting room, news reel and on-hold Muzak are 100’s of albums from the late 80s and early 90s charting a sound that has since been co-opted and repurposed by proponents of Vaporwave.
The audiovisual aesthetic that albums Success Story Vol. 5, Corporate Fanfares and Real or Unreal share with the micro-genre is uncanny. They pair crude digital graphics and corporate imagery with raspy, mid-tempo Smooth Jazz. Sans any accelerationist or ironic leanings, it’s a look and feel that a community of net-artists and producers work to replicate.
Accessible through the APM Music library, we found that the best results can be found using their search function, ticking the promo/ads filter and sorting the results by release date. Alternatively you can head to unaffiliated Youtube channel VR Trooper, where many of the tracks have been uploaded and sorted by label.
